Zonta Club of Jamestown proudly announced the Mary Bargar Scholarship award winner, the last of the local 2019 scholarship award winners at a special dinner at the Marvin House, June 5th. Three previous scholarship awards were presented in April; the Verna Nelson Scholarship, the Nell Newton Scholarship, and the Anne H. Crowe Scholarship each for $1000.
The Mary Bargar Scholarship is a financial award based on merit, presented to a female high school senior who intends to continue her education and enter the professions. This year’s Mary Bargar Scholarship award winner was Shannon McKee, daughter of Lisa Gierszal. Shannon is also the sister to siblings Max and Alexandra. She has been active in rowing, soccer, CRYS (Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony), Girls State, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and music (flute and piccolo). She was first runner up this year in the Chautauqua Area Scholarship Program. Shannon has also traveled through school programs to Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Italy and China.
Shannon was presented her award, and stated that, “Travel opens your heart and mind to all cultures.” “If we all work together; we experience extraordinary-ness that is the human.”
Shannon will be a 2019 graduate of Chautauqua Lake Central School. She will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in the fall for premed track majoring in biomedical sciences and exercise science and minoring in anthropology.
