Zonta KW celebrates International Women’s Day with award winning international speaker, human rights activist, social entrepreneur and author Samra Zafar.

The 17th annual International Women’s Day Celebration hosted by  Zonta KW is on Tuesday, March 10th.   The guest speaker, Samra Zafar, will share her inspiring story.  She escaped from a decade of abuse living as a child bride in Canada and went on to pursue her education as a single mother working multiple jobs.   She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Economics from the University of Toronto with the highest distinction.   She first wrote of her journey in 2017 for Toronto Life  and her article became the most-read article in 2017, and earned her a National Magazine Award nomination in the personal journalism category. Her 2017 TEDxtalk was named an all-time top 12 talk on gender-based violence

In March of 2019,  Zafar’s memoir A Good Wife: Escaping The Life I Never Chose,  was published and earned a spot on national bestseller lists for 12 consecutive weeks and was highlighted as a top 2019 read by The Washington Post.   The book is being published internationally by Penguin Random House and adapted to a television series by Bell Media.

 

The Zonta Club of Kitchener-Waterloo has been promoting social advocacy and working to empower women around the world for 40 years.  To date over $300,000 has been raised through this International Women’s Day event.  This year all proceeds will be donated to Zonta International for service projects including efforts to end child marriage in 12 countries.

This year’s event starts at 5:30 pm, at St. George’s Hall, Waterloo, has dinner, amazing raffle prizes, and features our guest speaker.
